  1. THE PRINCIPAL’S CORNER # 2
    READING TO YOUR CHILD
    :

Busy routines seem to be the way of life for so many families today; every activity needs to be scheduled. Well take out your Palm Pilot and be sure to schedule a daily twenty-minute story time with your child. >From newborn to ten-year-olds, children love to be cuddled on your lap or share a rocking chair to hear their favorite tale. For many children this is part of the routine prior to going to sleep, a quiet time with just the two of you. A time to build the love of books, words, and reading. This is when your child will develop favorite stories to laugh about, favorite characters to relate to and a favorite book that they will request that you read over and over. Check out the local bookstores for age appropriate titles and authors. Start building your child’s library at an early age. Garage and library sales are excellent sources for reduced priced books. As your child becomes a toddler be sure to visit the children’s section at your local library and check out their story times. Ask friends and family to include books in their gifts to your child. The greatest gift that you can give your child is the love of reading.

  2. Good Baby Oral Hygiene:

Baby teeth are the good start to your baby learning about their teeth. Even before teeth erupt, which could even happen near birth for some newborns, it is important to gently with a forefinger and clean gauze or soft cloth gently wipe along the small upper and lower ridges and teeth to get your baby comfortable with the concept of the inside of the mouth needs to be cleaned just like the hands and hair. As soon as the baby shows and interest in holding narrow items, from a feeding spoon to a hairbrush, present the baby with a infant basic rubbery fake tooth instrument. The purpose is to get the infant used to the motion and skill of eventually cleaning her own teeth as they come in. Think of the constant slurping of milk or formula. Think how it coats itself on pans, and other surfaces, the same happens onto the baby teeth and ridges, so each night if not 2 to 3 times a day get your baby in the habit of "brushing" her gums and/or teeth now before it is too late! Never let your baby go to sleep by giving them a bottle in the crib. Typically this is very harmful to the development of healthy teeth. Especially never give sugared or acidic juices, even fruit juice to your baby late at night to fall asleep. If you must give a bottle consider hold the baby in you lap and rocking her to sleep. But it you are truely at wits end just plain water is what is relatively ok if you must let the baby sleep that night with a bottle! But do not make a habit of this, figure out a better schedule, baby exercise time, etc. before taking the great risk of the devastation of Baby Bottle Syndrome. This syndrome typically if discovered at age 3 when many of the front teeth have erupted. Extensive discoloration of the teeth in the shape of the lips across the entire ridge end up brown, decayed, chalky and even have nerve damage, requiring extensive dental treatments including root canals on a three year old! Which is better a 3 year old permanently sleeping because of a bad reaction or overdose in a hospital room when having anaesthesia to treat extensive decay or, dealing with the sleep issue early on before this is the long term tragedy that still happen this day and age! Some parents have lost children due the ramifications of the Baby Bottle Syndrome in the dental operating room never to forget the awfulness that should have never occurred in the first place! Start YOUNG to get your infant COMFORTABLE with having her or his gums wiped clean. Something is better than NOTHING! If you must give the baby a bottle to suck on then PLAIN WATER is Better than a Fruit JUICE or SUGARED liquids! Put up with the crying if you can and have no options left think about the future and healthy teeth and mouth and BABY it is Your Choice and In Your Power TODAY!
    3.Baby Signing Uses:

The big communication story today in the media is baby signing. For example: a baby might by repetition rub her hands together to mean Please wash my hands clean with a cloth. Learning this communication style of hand gestures, pointing, or hand and finger motions help a less verbal baby communicate clearer her needs sooner before resorting to a crying spell all over a relatively simple thing, due to lack of other communication methods. One big benefit is a happier baby receiving care closer to her expanding needs. This same concept would greatly benefit her in a Daycare setting too! If the infants had this reinforcement with the daycare worker think how easier the care might be and certainly quieter! Reports state the very young children are have hearing loss due to noise exposure. Would not signing be a good start to a quieter daycare experience for the child and the worker! There are several good books on this subject in bookstores or on the web.
