		Safe and sound Parents worry endlessly about how to protect their children from stranger abduction and violence, but many overlook one of the biggest threats to their children's safety and well-being — their own home. Experts say that children between the ages of 1 and 4 are more likely to be killed by fire, burns, drowning, choking, poisoning, or falls than by a stranger's violence. About 2 and a half million children are injured or killed each year by dangers right in their own home, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). That's why it's so important to carefully childproof your home.
		How can I tell whether the water in my house is safe to drink?
		It's not easy. You can rely on your senses to alert you to a few of the more unappetizing things that spill into your drinking glass - like sulfur, with its distinctive rotten-egg smell, or too much chlorine. But some of the most serious (and most common) contaminants, such as bacteria, viruses, lead, and other chemicals, can't be tasted or smelled.
		How can I prepare my pet for our new baby?
		It's a good idea to start preparing your pet for your baby's arrival early in your pregnancy, or even when you're trying to conceive. The earlier you start, the better your results will be. But it's never too late to train your pet to get along with small children, even if you already have a baby or toddler. First, set up a special, private spot for your pet and let him get used to spending time there. Pick a place where he won't be disturbed, like a laundry room, a dog crate, or, for a cat, a high shelf. Stock it with his food bowl, water dish, blanket, and favorite toys. This will give your pet a safe, quiet space to retreat to when he's overstimulated by household commotion or a crying baby. One of the best things you can do is desensitize your pet to the rough handling young children can dole out. He'll need to get comfortable being touched in places where small hands can go, like between paw pads, on the face, tail, and underside of the body, and in the ears and mouth. Start by gently touching your dog or cat in these spots. Don't forget the insides of ears, inside the mouth (for dogs only), the top and underside of paws, and all sides of the tail. If your pet resists, have a helper feed him treats or a meal while you do this exercise. Try to do it at least five times a day for a two-to-five-minute period. Work with your pet in conjunction with his favorite activities, like mealtimes or play, so he'll associate your sessions with pleasurable things.
		How to prepare for an emergency
		When you're in the middle of a crisis, it's not always easy to find or remember important phone numbers. So make a list that includes everyone's home, work, cell, pager, school, and daycare numbers, along with contact information for neighbors, family doctors, ambulance services, nearby hospitals, the gas company, and local police, fire, and health departments. Our handy emergency contact worksheet can make this less of a chore. Keep one copy by the phone at home, one copy at work, one in your car, and one in your wallet. While you're at it, program these numbers right into your home and cell phones, too. Also make sure your partner and your children's caregivers have copies of your e-mail address (tuck it, along with other contact information, into your child's diaper bag or backpack), since e-mail might work when phones don't.
